A HEARO personal alarm is a small device that can be carried with keys, a bag or a backpack. Its purpose is to attract attention when you need assistance. Treat it as one part of a practical plan: access to the alarm, a way to leave and contact with emergency services should work together.
Understand your device before relying on it
HEARO activates sound and flashing light when its pin is pulled. Read the instructions for your model and learn how to switch it off. Buying the device does not automatically mean you will find it quickly or know what to do under pressure.
Do not base your safety plan on a loudness claim alone. The environment, possible witnesses and your ability to move away also matter. Noise may attract attention, but it cannot guarantee that somebody will intervene or that an aggressor will stop.
Why access matters more than storage at the bottom of a bag
Imagine leaving work with shopping in one hand and a phone in the other. An alarm underneath a wallet and several other items first needs to be found. Choose a consistent, accessible location and an attachment suited to your bag or clothing. Check access with the jacket or gloves you normally wear.
Practice need not mean repeatedly sounding the siren. First rehearse finding and holding the device calmly. Test sound only as directed by the manufacturer, warn others and keep it away from ears. Do not test it near a child’s face or an animal.
Combine alerting with moving towards help
When someone violates your boundaries and a way out is available, focus on reaching a staffed place or other assistance. Activating an alarm should not delay leaving. Add a specific request such as “Please call emergency services” or “This person is threatening me; please stay with me”.
For example, someone in a car park keeps approaching despite a clear refusal. You move towards a staffed entrance rather than remain in an argument. The alarm may help signal the problem while you leave. Once there, explain what happened and request support. This illustrates a possible decision, not a guaranteed result.
A loud alarm is not appropriate in every emergency
If you are hiding from an armed attacker, sound and light can reveal your location. Quiet, a secured hiding place and a safe call for help take priority. Do not activate a siren automatically just because you are carrying it.
An alarm does not replace a phone, a lock, suitable procedures or assistance from others. You do not need to approach an aggressor to use one. It should not be used to provoke somebody or as a prank. In Poland and the EU, call 112 when emergency assistance is required; check the correct number elsewhere.
Small habits support readiness
- Keep the device in a consistent, accessible place.
- Check the attachment and power readiness according to the instructions.
- When changing bags, check that the alarm comes with you.
- Identify places where you can request help along your usual route.
